A campground amenity list can tell you that laundry exists. It cannot tell you whether four loads started after dinner will be dry before the room closes.

“Laundry available” covers very different situations. Yellowstone's operator names three campground laundries, publishes separate seasonal hours, and lists washer and dryer counts for each location.[1] Colorado's Yampa River State Park puts its laundry at the Camper Services building at headquarters while warning that amenities differ among its river sites.[2] Boston/Cape Cod KOA says its laundry room is open around the clock, yet the change machine follows Registration building hours; app payment is another route.[3] On the Grand Canyon's North Rim, the campground is open in 2026 while laundry remains closed during recovery work.[4]

Treat laundry as a timed errand, not a checkmark on the campground page.

The listing leaves four questions unanswered

First, find the actual room. A facility at headquarters may be a drive from your loop. In Yellowstone, campers at Bridge Bay are directed to Fishing Bridge, while Madison campers are directed to Canyon.[1] That is a trip inside the trip, and it belongs in the schedule.

Next, separate room hours from usable start time. A 9 p.m. closing does not mean you can begin a wash at 8:45. Yellowstone's posted hours also shift later in the season, so an old screenshot can be wrong for your dates.[1]

Then check the bottleneck. A laundry may have more washers than dryers. Yellowstone lists 32 regular washers and one jumbo washer at Canyon, compared with 24 regular dryers and four jumbo dryers.[1] The imbalance may not hurt during a quiet morning, but it can create a drying queue when several campers wash at once.

Finally, prove you can pay. At Boston/Cape Cod KOA, the laundry room is open 24 hours, but cash conversion is tied to Registration building hours; the official page also names PayRange for card payment.[3] An app is not a backup until it is installed, accepts your card, and can connect where you are standing.

Calculate the dryer queue, not just the wash

The finish-time test is:

finish time = start + travel + scheduled wash/dry sequence + transfer time + return travel

Do not multiply one cycle by the number of loads unless you truly have one machine. Lay the loads on a timeline. Washers can run in parallel. Dryers can run in parallel. A load cannot enter a dryer until its wash is done, and a busy dryer pushes every later load back.

Copy these fields into a note or use the package worksheet:

FieldWhat to enter
AccessRoom location, guest restrictions, key or door code
ClockOpening, closing, and posted last-load time
CapacityWorking washers and dryers you can use; regular and jumbo separately
CyclesPosted wash and dry minutes, plus transfer time
PaymentCoins, card, app, and where to get change
BackupOffsite drive time, parking fit, hours, and last-load rule
DecisionCalculated finish, buffer, and pass/hold

Our worked comparison uses four loads starting at 5:30 p.m. The onsite room has two washers but only one available dryer. Even though the first two washes finish together, the fourth dryer cycle ends at 9:30 p.m., half an hour after a 9 p.m. close. That option is a hold.

Combining the same laundry into two verified jumbo loads finishes at 8:30 p.m. in the example. A nearby laundromat with four available washer-dryer pairs finishes at 7:40 p.m. even after adding 20 minutes of driving each way. Those times are not claims about a real campground. They show how to replace “probably enough time” with a schedule built from the labels on the machines in front of you.

Leave a buffer before closing. Fifteen minutes is the worksheet default, not a universal rule. Use more when the room is busy, the office closes early, or your only payment path depends on cellular service. A posted last-load time always wins over your calculation.

Make the call before unloading the hamper

  1. Ask whether the room is open for your dates and whether any machines are out of service.
  2. Record the room location, closing time, and any last-load cutoff.
  3. Look at payment instructions before sorting clothes. Get coins while the office is open or test the named app.
  4. Read the cycle times and capacity labels on the machines you intend to use.
  5. Put those numbers in the worksheet. If the finish time lands inside your buffer, reduce the load count, start earlier, or compare an offsite laundromat.

Do not count on a past visit. The Grand Canyon's 2026 notice is a sharp example: the North Rim campground can accept RV campers while laundry, showers, and the dump station remain closed.[4] Open campground and open amenity are separate facts.

The practical answer may be one load this evening and the rest tomorrow morning. It may be an offsite stop with enough parking for the tow vehicle, or a jumbo machine that removes two dryer turns. Pick the option that finishes on paper before the first sock goes into a washer.
