2026 Coachmen Beyond 22C review: easy-driving layout, tight cargo math

Bottom line

The 22C makes the best case for itself as a two-person touring van: its rear power sofa becomes the bed, the wet bath stays available, and the Ford Transit AWD chassis avoids diesel ownership. The catch is that a 22-foot van still demands daily conversion and careful loading. Buyers should verify the exact electrical package, option weight and 2026 documentation on the unit rather than treating a dealer template as a build sheet.

It fits a couple who values a familiar gas chassis, wants a real bath and expects paved-road touring with occasional maintained gravel. Skip it if you need permanent twin beds, four belted sleeping positions, large exterior cargo storage or rough-road clearance.

Official and listing specifications

Coachmen's current model page identifies the 22C as 22 feet 2 inches long with a 10,360-pound GVWR and 25-gallon fuel tank.^[1] The 2026 Campers Inn stock page adds a Ford Transit 350 HD AWD chassis, 27 gallons fresh, 15 gray and 12 black, plus a 148-inch wheelbase.^[3]

The manufacturer page can change during a model year and Coachmen tells shoppers to consult the company for current information.^[1] A prior 2025 flyer lists 8,900 pounds UVW and 1,460 pounds cargo carrying capacity, but that is not proof of the payload on a 2026 unit.^[2] Options, liquids and dealer-installed equipment consume payload. Read the yellow occupant-and-cargo label, weigh the candidate as equipped, then subtract people and trip cargo.

A chassis can be built in a different calendar or model year from the completed coach. Check the chassis VIN label, Coachmen certification label, window sticker, serial-number build sheet and installed-equipment manuals before accepting any specification.

Floorplan in daily use

The 22C's rear power sofa is its main trick. It preserves a lounge for travel days, then converts across the van into the bed. That is efficient, but bedding has to go somewhere every morning. Test the conversion with the table, window shades and the luggage you actually carry.

The wet bath is a better fit for travelers who insist on an onboard toilet and shower than for someone seeking residential elbowroom. Sit on the toilet, close the doors and mime a shower during the PDI. The 2026 listing describes a one-piece fiberglass shower and a compressor refrigerator, while the exact cooktop and off-grid package can vary.^[3]

The nominal 1,460-pound cargo figure from the older official flyer looks healthy for a Class B, but it is not a license to ignore axle limits.^[2] Four hundred pounds of people, water, food, tools and hitch load can disappear quickly. The safest buying decision comes from the labels and a scale ticket, not brochure arithmetic.

What reviewers and owners report

Older-model evidence is useful only when labeled by year. An independent 2020 road test liked the Transit driving experience and cab access, but found the rear cushions firm, the shade hardware fiddly and the wet-bath curtain arrangement imperfect.^[8] Those observations make a good test script for a 2026 PDI; they do not prove that Coachmen left each detail unchanged.

Two RV Insider owner reviews cover 2020 and 2021 units. Run the sofa at least five cycles. Open every screen and shade. Power the air conditioner, refrigerator, induction cooktop or LP appliance as equipped, inverter, solar display, water pump, furnace/water heater and every Firefly screen. Ask the seller to demonstrate the cold-weather settings and battery heating provisions for the exact lithium installation.

New purchase evidence

Coachmen's public model page did not expose a manufacturer-wide 2026 base MSRP in the material retrieved for this review. A Blue Compass listing showed a unit MSRP of $221,990 and an advertised $147,995 sale price.^[4] That MSRP belongs to that configured stock unit, not every 22C. The Campers Inn stock page required a price inquiry.^[3]

Ask for an itemized buyer's order that separates vehicle price, freight, preparation, documentation, tax, title, registration, finance incentives and optional service contracts. A large discount from “MSRP” is not comparable until equipment and mandatory fees match.

Current purchase paths are Coachmen's dealer network and dealer inventory. Get the VIN, option sheet and out-the-door number before traveling. Confirm whether the coach has the generator-based configuration or lithium/second-alternator package because that choice changes price, weight and off-grid operation.

A Canadian 2023 listing was excluded from the U.S.-dollar table because currency and import context would make it a poor direct comparison.

Used-unit inspection checklist

Pass if separate fixed beds matter more than the lounge. Compare the Beyond 22D for a different rear arrangement, the rear-bath 22RB, the Winnebago Solis for a simpler ProMaster-based family layout, and Transit-based adventure vans when rough-road systems and cargo are the priority. Compare exact years and options rather than model names alone.
