How to read campsite photos and dimensions before booking an RV site
Learn how to separate the RV pad from the living area, spot slope and obstructions, check deployed clearance, trace hookups, and place the tow vehicle before booking.

A campsite photo does not prove that your RV will fit. It shows one camera position, one moment in the season, and often an empty site with no slideouts, awning, truck, chairs, or utility hoses in use. The dimensions are not enough by themselves either. A "site length" may include sloped parking that works for a pickup but not the RV, while a long driveway can end at a tree or fence.
Use the listing as a measurement packet. Separate the parking pad from the outdoor living area, trace the RV's deployed footprint, find every fixed obstruction, and confirm where the tow vehicle and hookups go. Then ask the campground about the exact site number if one of those facts remains unclear.
Start by dividing the campsite into zones
Campers often read a photo as one open rectangle. Developed campsites are usually several functional spaces joined together:
- the campground road and the turning area used to enter the site;
- the driveway or parking spur where the RV and vehicles are expected to remain;
- the living area containing the table, fire ring, grill, or tent pad;
- utility connections; and
- borders such as trees, posts, curbs, retaining walls, boulders, ditches, or vegetation.
The National Park Service's campground design guide treats RV/vehicle parking and the adjoining outdoor living pad as separate parts of a site.[1] That distinction changes how a photo should be read. A broad gravel patch with a picnic table may be living space, not legal parking. A narrow paved strip may be the only place where tires are allowed.
Mark the boundaries you can see, then look for boundaries that may be hidden by leaves, shadows, parked vehicles, or the bottom edge of the frame. If you cannot tell whether a patch beside the pad is reinforced, usable ground or protected vegetation, do not budget it for a slide, step, tire, or tow vehicle.
Read the dimensions by name, not by the largest number
Copy each labeled field into your notes. Common fields include driveway length, site length, site width, maximum vehicle length, driveway grade, driveway entry, surface, overhead clearance, equipment type, and maximum vehicles.
They answer different questions:

This guide is deliberately about geometry rather than decoding length-limit definitions. If a listing's "maximum length" is itself ambiguous, resolve that separately before using the photo audit.
Treat the photo like a site plan
Begin at the road and work toward the back of the site. A front-facing photo may make the parking area look generous while hiding the angle required to back in. Ask five questions:
- Where must the rear tires stop?
- What is beside the RV at floor level and at slide height?
- What sits across the road from the entrance?
- Where will the door, steps, and awning open?
- Where can the truck or toad remain after setup?
Look for tire marks and pavement seams, but do not treat them as official boundaries. A wheel stop can shorten usable space. A retaining wall can prevent rear overhang. A tree trunk may clear the lower body while branches occupy the upper corner where a slide or awning would travel. Posts and pedestals become especially hard to judge in a wide-angle image because distances near the edge are stretched.
Multiple views are much more useful than one beauty shot. The road-facing view explains the backing angle. A side view shows slope and slide clearance. A rear view may reveal the stop, fence, drop-off, or utility pedestal. Check photo dates when they are available; growing vegetation and replaced site furniture can make an old image unreliable.
Separate slope from usable length
"Slight" or "moderate" grade is a warning to investigate, not a leveling calculation. A photograph can show the direction of the slope, but perspective makes it poor evidence of the amount. Compare the pad to vertical references such as posts and tree trunks, and to horizontal references such as retaining-wall courses. Then ask the campground for the approximate rise or drop if leveling range is tight.
Also determine whether the slope runs front to back, side to side, or both. Front-to-back correction and side-to-side correction use different equipment and affect step height differently. Never plan to lift tires beyond the limits in the RV or leveling-system manuals, and never assume a stabilizer jack is a leveling jack.
Obey River Park site 109 is a good example of why one site-length number can mislead. Its listing gives a 69-foot site length and 49-foot maximum vehicle length. The site note then divides the geometry: 49 feet of level space is available for camping equipment, followed by 20 feet of inclined parking for cars or boat trailers. It also identifies a steep, fenced rear boundary.[3] A photo-only reading could easily merge those two surfaces into one 69-foot RV pad.
Build a deployed-footprint sketch
Measure the RV as it will be used, not only as it travels. Record:
- exterior body width;
- each slide's projection and its distance from the front or rear corner;
- awning projection and arm locations;
- entry-step projection;
- height at the roof, air conditioner, antennas, and front cap;
- rear overhang behind the axle; and
- the location and reach of power, water, and sewer connections.
Draw the RV as a rectangle and add each deployed feature on the correct side. Do not combine all slide widths into one generic number. A tree beside the bedroom may be harmless to a living-room slide at the other end, while a pedestal at the rear corner can block a smaller slide that sits lower.
The NPS design guide notes that pop-outs and awnings add width and may occur on every side of an RV.[1] Your clearance audit therefore needs a left side, a right side, a front, and a rear. "The site is wide enough" is not useful unless the clear area lines up with the equipment that moves.
Elkmont Campground site E16 shows how these layers can conflict. Recreation.gov lists a 53-foot paved back-in driveway and a 35-foot maximum vehicle length. The site-specific note adds a slight downhill slope, an obstruction at the pad's end, trees that may interfere with awnings or slides, and a dumpster across the road that can reduce backing room.[2] None of those constraints is captured by the driveway length alone.
Check the living side before choosing an orientation
For most North American RVs, the main entry and awning are on the passenger side, while water, sewer, and shore-power connections are usually on the driver side. The NPS guide describes that as the typical arrangement, not a promise for every rig or site.[1]
Locate the picnic table and fire ring in the photos. If they are on the driver's side of a normal back-in pad, the site's useful living area may face away from the RV door. Pulling in nose-first might correct the patio orientation, but it can put the hookups on the far side, place the windshield or tow hitch near an obstruction, and conflict with one-way traffic rules. Do not improvise a pull-in orientation unless the operator allows it.
Keep fire rings and grills out of the awning footprint. Photos rarely provide enough information to judge heat clearance, and movable tables may not remain where photographed. If the only outdoor space requires moving campground equipment, ask whether that equipment may be moved and where it must stay.
Trace the hookup route
A listing that says "full hookups" says nothing about hose and cord length. Find the pedestal, water faucet, and sewer inlet in each photo. Estimate their position relative to the RV's connection points only after you decide where the RV must stop.
Check four things for every connection:
- which side of the pad it is on;
- distance from the RV connection;
- whether a slide, tire, step, or door would cover the route; and
- whether the sewer route can maintain the required fall without crossing a walkway.
Site 109 at Obey River Park warns that its hookups are opposite the expected side and tells campers to bring extra cord and hose.[3] That is a useful site-specific fact, but it is not permission to create an unsafe cable or hose crossing. Confirm that your listed, outdoor-rated electrical equipment has sufficient reach and capacity. Do not use improvised adapters or household extension cords to solve a placement problem.
Place the tow vehicle on paper
A two-vehicle allowance is a rule, not a reserved patch of pavement. Sketch the truck or toad after the RV is parked and slides are open. Make sure it does not block the road, utility access, the entry steps, or the neighbor's maneuvering space.
Fort Pickens site A036 makes this distinction explicit. The listing calls its 38-foot measurement the total driveway length, requires the complete towing package to stay on the pavement, and says overflow parking is limited rather than guaranteed.[4] For that site, planning to unhitch and "find somewhere" for the pickup is not a fit plan.
Ask whether the tow vehicle may park crosswise, beside the RV, or only in line. Verify whether a dolly or trailer counts as equipment that must remain on the pad. If overflow is necessary, confirm that it is open for your dates, accepts your vehicle type, and does not require a separate permit or fee.
Run a pre-booking measurement audit
Use this sequence for the exact campsite, not just the campground:
- Save the site number, loop, listing URL, map, all photos, and the date checked.
- Record every labeled dimension and keep each field name attached to its number.
- Outline the road, parking surface, living area, and visible borders on a screenshot or sketch.
- Mark slope direction, the wheel stop, rear boundary, trees, posts, pedestal, table, fire ring, and objects across the road.
- Draw the RV in its planned stopping position with slides, awning, and steps deployed.
- Add the unhitching space and final parking place for the tow vehicle or toad.
- Trace the electrical cord, fresh-water hose, and sewer hose from the RV to each connection.
- List every fact the photos cannot prove.
- Send those questions to campground staff with the exact site number and rig measurements.
- Save the answer with the reservation and recheck the listing shortly before departure.
A useful message is specific: "For site E16, my trailer is 34 feet long. The driver's-side slide projects 36 inches near the rear, and the passenger-side awning projects 8 feet. The pickup is 21 feet long. Can the slide and awning fully open with the trailer entirely on the pad, and where must the pickup park? Has the end obstruction or roadside dumpster changed since the posted photos?"
That gives staff enough geometry to answer. "Will my 34-footer fit?" does not.
Book only what you can verify
Photos are excellent for finding conflicts, but poor for proving clearance to the inch. Listing dimensions are useful when their labels and boundaries are clear, but they do not show every tree branch, curb, hose run, or backing constraint. The booking decision should survive both tests: the numbers permit the rig, and the site-specific layout permits the way you need to use it.
If either test depends on a guess, contact the campground or choose a site with more margin. A few feet of unused space is cheaper than arriving with a slide that cannot open, a truck with nowhere legal to park, or a hookup that cannot be reached safely.
