Retract the RV awning before wind or storms: a campsite safety rule
A practical, manual-first rule for closing an RV patio awning before forecast gusts, thunderstorms, extended rain, sleep or time away from camp, with model-specific pooling and securing instructions.
Source note: This RVCamping.info guide uses National Weather Service alert guidance and manuals for the Lippert Solera Power Awning, Dometic 9100 and Carefree Travel'R. Your awning's label and exact model manual control. There is no universal safe wind speed for every RV awning.
An RV patio awning should be fully retracted before forecast wind, thunderstorms or extended rain arrives, and whenever the campsite will be unattended. Do it while conditions are still calm. If a storm is already close enough that wind, lightning or flying debris makes outdoor work unsafe, leave the awning and get people into the campground's designated sturdy shelter.
That rule sounds conservative because an extended awning is a large lever attached to a vehicle. Tie-downs, de-flappers and automatic wind sensors do not turn it into storm equipment. The three manufacturer manuals checked for this guide all tell owners to close in some combination of wind, heavy or extended rain, and time away, but their operating details differ.[2][3][4]
Use the forecast as a go/no-go check
Check the National Weather Service point forecast for the campground, then open its hourly forecast to look at the timing of wind, gusts and rain. Also check active watches, warnings and advisories before extending the awning and again before a hike, drive into town or bedtime.
Use this decision order:
- Your exact manual gives a limit or closing instruction: follow it. Use forecast gusts, not only the lower sustained-wind value, when comparing the forecast with a stated limit.
- Wind, heavy rain or thunderstorms are expected but the manual gives no number: retract. Do not create a personal "safe mph" from a different brand's manual.
- A High Wind Watch or Severe Thunderstorm Watch includes the campground: close the awning during the preparation window. NWS defines a High Wind Watch as strong sustained wind being possible and says to secure loose outdoor items; a Severe Thunderstorm Watch means severe storms are possible nearby and people should be ready to act.[1]
- A Wind Advisory is in effect: the NWS says strong wind is occurring and outdoor objects should be secured. The awning should already be closed.[1]
- A Severe Thunderstorm or High Wind Warning is issued: stop treating the awning as the priority. A severe-thunderstorm warning means the threat is happening or imminent, and NWS directs people to shelter in a sturdy building away from windows.[1]
A forecast percentage for rain does not describe the strength of a possible gust under a thunderstorm. Nor does a calm campsite prove the next outflow boundary will be gentle. Base the choice on the whole forecast and alerts, not the breeze at the picnic table.
A practical forecast trigger when the manual has no mph figure
RVCamping.info's conservative trigger is simple: if the campground forecast mentions gusts, thunderstorms, heavy rain or an extended wet period during the time the awning would be open, put it away. This is an editorial safety recommendation, not a manufacturer wind rating. A watch or advisory makes the answer automatic: retract before it begins or while there is still a safe preparation window.
If your model manual publishes a specific threshold, treat it as a limit for that model and configuration, not a target. Exposure changes across a campsite. An awning beside an open field, on a ridge or at the mouth of a canyon can see a different gust than the nearest reporting station.
The unattended-camp rule has no weather exception
Retract before everyone leaves the site, even for a short errand. Also retract before sleep if nobody will be awake and able to respond safely. "Unattended" includes an awning left open while the group is at the bathhouse, pool, trail or neighboring site.
The Dometic 9100 manual says never to leave that awning open unattended and to stow it when wind, heavy rain or severe weather is expected.[3] Carefree's current standard Travel'R manual recommends retracting when leaving the RV unattended because weather can change unexpectedly.[4] Lippert's Solera Power Awning manual advises complete retraction during high wind, heavy rain or an extended time away.[2]
An automatic retract feature does not cancel this rule unless the exact manual explicitly says it does, and the Carefree and Dometic instructions cited here do not grant that exception. Sensors need power and a working mechanism. Some detect movement rather than a universal wind speed, and a fast gust can damage fabric or hardware before a system completes its cycle.
Rain pitch is for drainage, not storm permission
A properly pitched awning may shed light rain. It is not safe to use that feature as a reason to leave the canopy out through heavy or extended rain.
The Dometic 9100 manual allows one arm to be lowered into a water-shed position for light rain, but tells owners to close for expected heavy rain and never allow water to pool.[3] The Carefree Travel'R manual likewise says to roll up for extended rain. If water has already collected, that particular manual calls for retracting in 8- to 12-inch steps to dump it and reduce fabric stretching or distortion.[4]
The Lippert Solera Power Awning behaves differently: its manual says the awning may pitch itself to purge pooled water and can dump a significant amount without warning.[2] Keep children, pets, chairs and electrical gear away from the runoff side. Never stand beneath a sagging pocket of water.
These are model-specific procedures. Do not copy Carefree's step-retraction method onto a Dometic or Lippert awning without finding that instruction in the correct manual. Do not release an adjustable arm while it is loaded with water or being hit by wind; the Dometic 9100 manual expressly warns against disengaging its adjustable knob in those conditions.[3]
If the fabric is already deeply pooled, hardware is bent or the roller is twisted, clear the area and stop operating it. The load may release suddenly. Contact the awning or RV manufacturer, campground staff or a qualified RV technician from a safe location.
Retract and secure it before conditions deteriorate
The normal power-awning sequence is short, but the model manual remains the checklist:
- Clear people, pets, chairs, rugs, lights and hanging accessories from beneath and around the awning.
- Confirm that nothing will be trapped against the RV wall. Turn off awning-mounted lights if the manual requires it.
- Remove only those tie-downs or accessories that the awning maker permits, and do so while conditions are calm. Lippert warns that tying down the roll tube on the Solera Power Awning prevents its free-floating arms from working as designed and may damage the awning or RV.[2]
- Stand where you can see both arms and the roller. Keep hands away from joints and pinch points.
- Retract with the normal control until the canopy is fully rolled and both arms are seated evenly.
- Engage travel locks or support-arm latches if the installed model has them. Lippert's Solera manual says an equipped locking latch must be locked after retraction and before travel.[2]
- Walk outside once more. Look for a loose arm, fabric protruding from the roll, a cover that did not close or an accessory still attached.
"Retracted" and "secured for travel" are not always identical. A motor may stop with the canopy rolled while a manual latch still needs to be set. Check both ends rather than trusting the switch noise from inside.
If the awning will not retract
Do not wait for the first gust to find the override instructions. Save the manual offline and keep the required tool where it can be reached without unpacking the RV.
If the awning stalls while the weather is still calm:
- stop repeated switch cycling;
- check the dedicated fuse, battery state and obvious obstructions only as the RV and awning manuals direct;
- use the exact model's emergency or manual-close procedure;
- secure the closed assembly by the manufacturer's method if the drive is disabled;
- arrange service before opening it again.
For example, the cited Solera manual describes a manual override at the drive head and specifies a 7/16-inch socket with a drill or a slower ratchet method.[2] That is not a universal awning procedure. Spring-loaded manual awnings, cassette awnings and other power heads can store energy or use different release points.
If lightning, strong gusts or a warning arrives before you can close it, abandon the repair. Move everyone to the campground's designated sturdy shelter. An RV is not the place to improvise on exterior hardware during severe weather.
Find the exact manual before the next trip
Photograph the awning data label. Record the manufacturer, model, serial number, controller and any sensor model. The RV builder's brochure may name only a brand or may cover several awning options, so confirm what is actually installed.
Then answer five questions from that manual:
- When must the awning be retracted for wind, rain and absence?
- Does it publish a wind limit, a sensor sensitivity setting, or no mph figure at all?
- How is light-rain pitch set, and what does it say about pooled water?
- What locks, latches or inspections are required after closing?
- What is the safe manual-retraction procedure after loss of power?
Write the answers on a setup card. If a numeric setting appears in a manual for another awning, ignore it. The Carefree Travel'R, Dometic 9100 and Lippert Solera documents used here provide different mechanisms and instructions; none supports one wind-speed threshold for every RV patio awning.[2][3][4]
Campsite awning rule to remember
Close early: before forecast gusts or storms, before extended rain, before leaving camp and before sleep when nobody will monitor it. Use rain pitch only for the light-rain conditions allowed by the exact manual. If a warning arrives first, shelter people rather than risking an outdoor struggle with the awning.
