North Mills River closes for nine months, including its winter walk-up season
North Mills River Campground is scheduled to close Nov. 16, 2026 through Aug. 15, 2027 for renovations, overriding its normal winter walk-up schedule.
A dated renovation notice cancels both the normal winter walk-up season and much of the 2027 reservation season, even though the same listing still describes year-round access.
The alert overrides the standing season
North Mills River's Recreation.gov page says the campground will close November 16, 2026 through August 15, 2027 for renovations. It also says reservations will not be available during that period.[1] Those dated lines control the overnight plan, even though the same page still describes the campground as open year-round.
This is easy to misread because the standing text sounds specific: full services normally run March 20 through November 15, followed by winter walk-up camping with limited services through March 20.[1] The renovation window starts on the same day that winter operations would normally begin. There is no winter walk-up exception in the alert.
The closure removes two different camping seasons
The first loss is the entire normal winter walk-up period. The second is most of the next full-service season, from its usual March 20 start through the scheduled August 15 end of construction.[1] A traveler searching only for bookable dates could mistake the blank calendar for a reservation-system delay or sold-out weekends.
The more useful interpretation is simpler: overnight inventory is intentionally unavailable. Do not build a winter or spring itinerary around arriving without a reservation, and do not assume a summer date will open merely because it falls inside the campground's usual season.
For a group trip, remove the campground from the shared plan now rather than leaving it as a tentative first choice. That prevents one person from booking nearby activities while another waits for overnight inventory that the notice says will not be released. Choose the replacement campground before comparing day-use options.
Keep the surrounding forest separate from the campground
The notice applies to North Mills River Campground and mentions campsite, day-use and amenity improvements.[1] It does not establish that every trail, forest road or recreation area nearby will close for the same nine months. Treat those as separate destinations with their own alerts rather than turning one campground notice into a regional closure.
That distinction also matters for alternatives. A nearby public campground may use a different operator, season and reservation window. Verify the replacement site by name, along with its hookups, rig limits and road access, instead of assuming that the North Mills River operating pattern carries over.
Plan around a scheduled end, not a guaranteed reopening
August 15, 2027 is the current scheduled end of the closure.[1] Construction schedules can move. For a late-August trip, wait for bookable inventory and a current status message before treating August 16 as an arrival date.
Until then, save the alert with the trip notes and remove North Mills River from any itinerary inside the closure window. The year-round description explains normal operations; the dated renovation notice explains what a camper can actually do.
