Catherine Breed is just a few days into a long journey. She has set out to swim the entire length of the California coastline—that’s 900 miles. No one has done this before, so, if she’s able to complete her quest, she’ll be the first.

Breed is an endurance swimmer, and she holds nine records for open-water swimming. The 33-year-old athlete plans to swim up to eight hours each day, then she’ll rest, eat, and sleep on a sailboat following her with a support crew. She wears a magnetic band that deters sharks as she swims.
See Breed dive into the ocean at the California/Oregon border to begin her record-breaking swim along the entire California coast below (or watch it here).
