Mother/Daughter Team Helps Keep Stranded Whale Alive

A young humpback whale was recently trapped on a sandbank near the entrance of Wathumba Creek on the coast of K’gari in Queensland, Australia. Luckily for the juvenile whale, beachgoers sprung into action. Among those who jumped in to help were Chantelle Smith and her daughter. Smith recorded her daughter’s efforts to keep the whale wet as they waited for more help to arrive. Guardian Australia shared Smith’s footage.

“Chantelle Smith was with her daughter Sunday morning on K’gari when they came across a stranded juvenile humpback whale,” wrote Guardian Australia in a Facebook post sharing the footage. “After she took this footage, a number of other local volunteers showed up to keep the animal wet.”
According to Guardian Australia, the Department of Environment was able to confirm that the whale eventually managed to self-release returned to the ocean.
