“Not many will ever hear this sound in their entire lifetime,” wrote the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in an Instagram post. “And we thought you deserved to.” The sound in question is the “caterwaul” of a female Florida panther calling for her mate. USFWS describes the call as “haunting” and “as rare to witness as the panther herself.”

In USFWS’s video, you can also see the caterwauling panther’s mate scratching a log. Males do this to mark their territory and to maintain their claws.
“Thanks to our trail cams, we’re finally able to witness moments like this—something scientists once thought nearly impossible to document,” USFWS wrote in the post caption.
