The famous pair of bald eagles living in Big Bear Valley, California—Jackie and Shadow—are welcoming their first chick of the year as we speak. It’s hatch day for their baby eaglet, which is not considered fully “hatched” until it is free of eggshell. Meanwhile, Jackie and Shadow’s second egg has a “pip” (a crack), so chick #2 is certainly coming soon.

“Hatching and a Pip!” wrote Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV), the non-profit that operates the live nest cams that record Jackie and Shadow. “The first egg is still in the process of hatching [. . .] The chick has popped its head out of the shell to say a happy hatch day to mom and dad!”
