‘Grizz in January!’ Very Early Grizzly Bear Spotted in Yellowstone

Imagine Rob Wild’s surprise when he was guiding a group in Yellowstone National Park in January . . . and they spotted a grizzly bear. Shouldn’t that bear be hibernating? The group spotted the bear near Specimen Ridge within the Wyoming park, and they were quite shocked.

“WOW, what a day! A grizzly in January is a first for me,” wrote Rob Wild in his Instagram post sharing the footage.

The tour company, Yellowstone Wild, also shared the video, adding:

“A winter bear! A January grizzly in Yellowstone to be more specific. Wow! What a sight, something many never expected to see. Notice the slow labored motions, this bear has likely emerged from hibernation for a short stroll. Perhaps his powerful nose caught the wind of a nearby feast, a carcass. Why do you think this bear was out and about on January 26?”
