‘First Time in a Century’: Gray Wolf Spotted in Los Angeles County

For the first time in a century, there’s a wild gray wolf in Los Angeles County, California. The young female wolf was born farther north in the state, but she’s ventured farther south than any others of her species have for a very long time. Wildlife officials believe the wolf, known as BEY03F, is looking for a mate.

The lone LA County wolf has a GPS collar that makes it easy for wildlife officials to track her movements. Conservationists say her presence is the result of a gray-wolf reintroduction effort in Yellowstone National Park several decades ago.

“This wolf is the furthest south we have verified a wolf since that introduction 30 years ago. And it’s the first time we have verified a wolf in L.A. County in modern times,” Axel Hunnicutt, gray wolf coordinator for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, told local ABC 7 News. “I can’t tell you the last time there was a wolf in L.A. County, but it likely was well over a hundred years ago.”
