Ten mountaineers recently died in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan, sending shock waves of grief through the mountaineering community. One of the deceased is Nirmal “Nims” Purja, who was pursuing his 58th summit of an 8,000-meter peak. Purja’s body was recovered yesterday from the mountain, about a week after the tragedy occurred. The mountaineer’s last-known voice message is a haunting reminder of how fragile life is when you’re living on the edge.
NDTV has shared the voice message, which Purja had sent a journalist through WhatsApp about 14 hours before an avalanche killed him and nine others from Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, China, Britain, and the United States. The voice note included Purja’s current location—Camp 2 on Broad Peak. Purja also told the recipient that he’d opened the internet to check weather conditions and saw his message.
