An annual event in Chincoteague, Virginia, centers around a bunch of wild ponies swimming across the Assateague Channel. This year, there were about 150 ponies. Footage of the animals’ famous swim is circulating widely online.

According to a local tourism website, the Chincoteague Pony Swim dates back to the 1800s. “For the pony swim, the Saltwater Cowboys round up feral Chincoteague ponies from Assateague Island and drive them across the Assateague Channel to Veteran’s Memorial Park on Chincoteague Island,” the site says.
NBC Philadelphia shared the footage, claiming the herding exercise helps control the herd’s population and raises funds for the local volunteer fire company. The pony swim is conducted when the tide is “slack calm,” so that the young ponies are safe from strong currents.
