2026 Midwest Automotive Designs Passage MD4 170 EXT review: seven seats, two sleepers

Summary: The 2026 Midwest Automotive Designs Passage MD4 170 EXT combines seven belted positions, a rear power lounge/bed, a wet bath and a long Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500XD body. It suits a couple that also carries passengers, but the price, 24-foot length, payload, electrical configuration and exact build paperwork need a careful audit.

Research disclosure: This is a desk-researched buyer guide, not a road test. RVCamping.info did not drive, inspect, weigh, rent, sleep in, purchase or otherwise test this motorhome.

The Passage family does not appear in RVCamping.info's review manifest during the prior 365 days. The previously reviewed Midwest Patriot is a different model family, though buyers should expect some shared layouts, components and service questions.

Bottom line

The MD4 has an unusual split personality. It can carry seven belted passengers, yet Midwest publishes sleeping capacity for two. The front four captain's chairs and rear lounge make it useful for day travel, while the 68-by-80-inch power bed, galley and rear wet bath turn it into a couples' camper after parking. Midwest lists 24 feet 2 inches of length, 11,030 pounds GVWR, 15,250 pounds GCWR and a 5,000-pound hitch rating.[1]

That is a lot of vehicle for anyone expecting compact-van parking. It is also a complicated coach. The standard configuration uses propane, a 2,000-watt inverter and a generator; the optional Freedom package changes the power architecture, removes propane and the generator, and adds a larger inverter, lithium bank, secondary alternator and more solar.[1] A buyer must review the exact build sheet rather than treating every online Passage description as interchangeable.

Best fit: a couple that wants a long luxury Sprinter, a true wet bath, generous rear bed dimensions and four individual captain's chairs for occasional passengers.

Skip it: buyers who need four or more permanent sleeping positions, easy city parking, a fixed bed, transparent one-price shopping, or enough published curb-weight information to skip an exact-unit scale ticket.

Official specifications for the 2026 MD4 170 EXT

Midwest's current page identifies the model as the 2026 Passage and separates the FD2, MD2 and MD4 columns.[1] These figures apply to the MD4 170 EXT, not the shorter Passage 144.

The build sheet matters more than the family description

A manufacturer unit sheet for stock 15237 identifies a 2026 Passage MD4 and prices a Freedom 1620Ah lithium package, while the family page describes a Freedom 1080 package.[1][2] That does not make either source useless. It proves the option content can vary. Record battery maker, module count, nominal and usable energy, inverter model, alternator output, solar wattage, heating equipment, generator and propane hardware from the exact van.

The same rule applies to dimensions. Midwest says 24 feet 2 inches. A La Mesa listing rounds a Passage MD4 to 25 feet.[3] Measure travel height, length and width yourself and write the results on the dash. Do not plan a low-clearance route from a rounded marketplace field.

Coach year and chassis year

A 2026 coach can sit on a chassis produced earlier. The coach designation, Mercedes VIN year, completion date and warranty start dates are separate facts. Record the VIN, Midwest serial number, Mercedes data card, completed-vehicle label and factory unit sheet before paying a nonrefundable deposit.

Floorplan and daily use

Seats by day, bed by night

The MD4 uses four captain's chairs ahead of a rear power lounge. That makes conversation and passenger travel its strongest use case. At camp, the rear lounge becomes the only published bed. Bedding, fill cushions and anything stored on the sofa must move every night.

Seven belts do not mean seven campers can sleep inside. They also do not establish child-restraint compatibility. Inspect belt anchor points, head restraints, seat orientation and the exact Mercedes and upfitter instructions before assigning passengers.

Build the bed at the dealer. Check gaps, support, power operation and emergency manual movement. Both sleepers should test the 68-by-80-inch surface and then try reaching the bathroom and exit while the bed is down.

Wet bath, galley and storage

The rear wet bath combines toilet and shower in one compartment. It saves floor space but puts moisture control, drain performance and usable elbow room ahead of decorative finish. Stand inside with the door closed, simulate a shower, reach the vent and inspect how water is kept away from cabinetry and the aisle.

The galley includes an induction cooktop, refrigerator, microwave, sink and removable table in current product descriptions.[1] The standard propane configuration and all-electric Freedom configuration manage energy differently. Run the microwave, cooktop and air conditioner under a controlled demonstration while watching battery, inverter temperature and shore/generator or alternator response.

Storage has to serve passengers and campers. Open every cabinet with the captain's chairs occupied and the bed deployed. Owner discussions have praised interior finish while also questioning inaccessible or wasted upper-cabinet space in some Midwest layouts.[6] That report is not a measurement of the 2026 MD4. Use it as a prompt to load your real luggage before accepting the layout.

Payload, towing and road manners

Midwest publishes GVWR, axle ratings and GCWR but not an exact-unit curb weight or occupant-and-cargo figure on the family page.[1] The yellow cargo label is essential. Seven adults, water, food, batteries, options, a hitch load and luggage can consume capacity quickly. Weigh the loaded van by axle.

A 5,000-pound receiver rating does not promise 5,000 pounds of usable towing after loading. Confirm actual van weight, rear axle load, tongue weight and GCWR. The 24-foot body also needs a realistic parking, fuel-stop and campsite plan.

Forum owners discuss crosswind behavior and suspension upgrades, with sharply different opinions about whether changes are necessary.[5] Those anecdotes concern different years and builds. Drive the exact van on ordinary roads before buying, then base any modification on measured axle weights and qualified chassis advice.

What owners and renters report

Independent evidence is thin and mostly concerns earlier Passage or related Midwest vans. It can shape an inspection, but it cannot establish a 2026 defect rate.

  • An iRV2 owners' thread includes reports of charging faults, secondary-alternator replacement, missing wiring information, inconsistent documentation and delayed support. Other contributors praise interior fit and continue using their vans despite those concerns.[5][6]
  • Class B Forum discussions praise the Passage layout and livability but criticize an overhanging wardrobe and encourage buyers to inspect power-system documentation and usable storage.[7]
  • Reviews attached to a 2021 Passage rental describe smooth driving and a successful first-time renter trip. Those reports concern one privately maintained older unit, not a factory sample of the 2026 MD4.[8]

The mixed evidence argues for a long powered pre-delivery inspection. Ask the seller to demonstrate every charging source, provide wiring and component documents, and identify who will service the Mercedes chassis, Midwest conversion and each major appliance.

New purchase path and asking-price snapshot

Midwest's public 2026 model page did not show an official base MSRP at capture. A manufacturer unit sheet for stock 15237 showed a base floorplan figure of $232,493 and separately priced options, including a lithium package.[2] That sheet belongs to one build; it is not presented here as a national base MSRP.

At 2026-10-12 00:28 UTC, sampled advertisements showed:

  • La Mesa/RecVan: new 2026 Passage MD4 AWD, stock MN214031, $220,538 ask and dealer-labeled $294,050 MSRP.[3]
  • Southern Luxury Sales: new 2026 Passage MD4 AWD, stock 14867, Houston, $219,995 in indexed marketplace evidence.[4]
  • Williams Family RV: new 2026 Passage MD4 170 EXT, stock 2608, Robertsdale, $178,895 in indexed inventory evidence.[9]

These are asking prices, not completed transactions. Freight, delivery, preparation, documentation, tax, title, registration, financing conditions, protection products and accessories may be excluded. Request an itemized out-the-door offer and the manufacturer unit sheet for the VIN.

Purchase paths: Midwest's dealer locator and request-information form are the official starting points.[1] Compare VIN-specific dealer listings, then make any deposit refundable pending paperwork, independent RV inspection, Mercedes scan, loaded scale ticket, recall clearance and a full systems demonstration.

Used-market snapshot

These asking prices were observed at 2026-10-12 00:28 UTC. They are not sale prices, appraisals or a market value, and the configurations are not identical to the 2026 review unit.

A separate used 2025 MD4 listing showed 3,527 miles but did not expose a reliable price in the captured page.[11] The three priced examples span model years, sellers and equipment generations. Compare battery age, generator hours, chassis service, water damage, option content and open recalls before comparing the numbers.

Model-specific used-unit inspection checklist

  1. Match VIN, title, Midwest serial number, completed-vehicle label, build sheet and MD4 floorplan.
  2. Record coach year, chassis year, production date and every warranty start date.
  3. Confirm Sprinter 3500XD, wheelbase, drivetrain and axle ratings from the VIN data card.
  4. Read the yellow occupant-and-cargo label and weigh the travel-loaded van by axle.
  5. Measure travel height, width and length with antennas, A/C, awning and racks.
  6. Reconcile every MSRP, option and package claim against the manufacturer unit sheet.
  7. Inventory battery modules and record model, age, firmware, faults and usable capacity.
  8. Identify whether the van is standard propane/generator or a Freedom all-electric build.
  9. Test shore, solar, alternator and generator charging as equipped.
  10. Run microwave, induction cooktop and A/C while watching voltage, current and inverter heat.
  11. Locate electrical diagrams, fuses, disconnects and manual overrides; reject undocumented improvisation.
  12. Run the VIN through NHTSA, Midwest and Mercedes recall/service-campaign tools on inspection day.
  13. Ask specifically about inverter ground-cable campaign 26V380; the NHTSA filing covers listed Midwest lines and build configurations, so VIN confirmation controls.[12]
  14. Inspect the power sofa, hinges, wiring, supports and emergency manual movement.
  15. Build the bed and measure it; test comfort and overnight bathroom access.
  16. Inspect every captain's chair, pedestal, belt, head restraint, slide and swivel lock.
  17. Pressurize, fill and drain fresh, gray and black systems; inspect tanks, valves and macerator.
  18. Shower-test the wet bath and inspect seals, drain speed, venting and adjacent cabinetry.
  19. Operate heat and hot water from cold; identify fuel source and service access.
  20. Moisture-meter roof, windows, bath, floor edges, awning mounts and exterior penetrations.
  21. Check tire dates, pressures, load ratings, brakes, steering, alignment and suspension.
  22. Verify actual hitch and tongue-load plans against scale weights and GCWR.
  23. Confirm local Mercedes and Midwest coach service before purchase.
  24. Make the sale contingent on clean title/lien history, records, keys, manuals and an independent inspection.

Alternatives worth comparing

  • Grech Strada-ion Lounge: similar long Sprinter lounge format with a large lithium system; compare seating, wet bath and service access.
  • Airstream Interstate 24GL: passenger-focused extended Sprinter with a more established touring-coach dealer path.
  • Pleasure-Way Plateau TS: sleeps two in a rear lounge but carries fewer passengers, which may better suit a camping-first couple.

Compare exact-year documents and unit labels. Shared chassis dimensions do not make coach systems or payload interchangeable.

Methodology, limitations and disclosures

This review uses Midwest's current 2026 product page as the specification baseline. Dealer and marketplace pages are evidence only for the identified listings at the capture time. Older owner and renter reports are inspection leads, not proof that every 2026 Passage has the same strengths or faults.

No exact 2026 Passage MD4 170 EXT photograph with an explicit license permitting commercial editorial reuse was found. Manufacturer, dealer, marketplace and video images were not reused. The lead image is an original 1600-by-900 non-photorealistic buyer-check diagram; it is not a photograph or exact floorplan rendering.

No video is embedded. No video frame or thumbnail was downloaded or reused.

RVCamping.info did not inspect the reviewed van, verify a VIN, obtain a scale ticket, contact owners or test a battery. Exact curb weight, payload, option content, chassis year, official national MSRP and real transaction prices remain unresolved until a buyer checks a specific unit.
