While looking out over the partially frozen Detroit River, some onlookers were distraught to spot three deer floating on a thin chunk of ice in the middle of the water. The man recording the now-viral video, Andrew MacLeod, was concerned about the animals and called 9-1-1. Officials weren’t worried, though, since deer can swim quite well. This didn’t assuage MacLeod’s concerns, though, since the water was ice cold.

“Three deer were seen floating down the Detroit River on a sheet of ice earlier this week, surprising onlookers in Ontario,” wrote Fox Weather in an Instagram post sharing MacLeod’s footage. “Officials said deers are naturally good swimmers due to their unique coat, powerful hind legs and torpedo-shaped bodies.”
