Missing Hiker Found Dead From Bear Attack in Glacier National Park

Yesterday, search and rescue crews found the body of a missing hiker in Glacier National Park, and the victim’s wounds suggest the hiker died from a bear attack. Crew members found the hiker about 2.5 miles up the Mt. Brown Trail, about 50 feet off the trail in “a densely wooded area with downed timber.”

Although the latest press release from the National Park Service (NPS) doesn’t name the victim, an NPS press release from May 6, the day before the gruesome discovery, announced a search for Anthony Pollio, a 33-year-old man from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, who had been missing since May 3.

Sections of the Mt. Brown Trail remain closed to allow for a full investigation into the incident. Glacier National Park says this is the first human fatality caused by a bear since 1998. The last injury from a bear attack in Glacier was in August 2025. 

The bear attack on a hiker in Glacier comes on the heels of an incident at Yellowstone National Park, in which a grizzly bear injured two hikers near Old Faithful.

This situation is still developing, and details may change.
