‘Freak Accident’: Hiker Impaled by His Own Trekking Pole

David Cifaldi was hiking up Montana’s Granite Peak with two friends when a “freak accident” left him impaled by his own trekking pole. He described the incident to local news, saying he tripped and fell, and then when he rolled over, he realized one of his poles had actually pierced his side and gone clean through his body. Thankfully, it didn’t pierce any organs.
Cifaldi is a nurse, so he assessed his condition and decided to hike out on his own. The trio was 10 miles into their hike up Montana’s tallest peak, so Cifaldi had to hike 10 miles back down the mountain with a trekking pole spearing him in the side.

According to a GoFundMe set up to help Cifaldi with medical costs following his injury, one of Cifaldi’s friends used a Garmin inReach to alert Stillwater County Search and Rescue (SAR). The SAR unit “staged a team in case his condition changed, and checked in every 30 minutes the whole way out.”
