When imagining animal attacks, a river otter is never the animal that comes to my mind. For some reason, I always imagine large, apex predators. Something like a great white shark or a mountain lion. However, this family was attacked by a river otter, and quite viciously, too. Now, over a year later, they are set to receive a large sum for the ordeal.
Family Is Attacked By A River Otter

NewsNationNow shared some of the details surrounding the attack. The outlet shared that the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife responded to the attack. They received a call “around 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 12, 2024.” In that call, the victim’s mother was frantic.
She explained that a river otter had attacked her child, snatching the toddler into the water as they “walked along the dock of the Bremeron marina.” Unfortunately, the attack did not stop there. The mother rushed forward and managed to lift her toddler up out of the water. However, in doing so, she put herself in harm’s way.
The otter surged forward and bit her arm. Additionally, they reported that “the animal continued the attack even as the family departed the dock.” The child suffered “several scratches and bites on their head, face, and legs.” Also, both mother and child were forced to get rabies shots following the attack.
Family Is Set To Receive A Large Sum In Compensation
After the incident, the mother filed a complaint. The outlet shared that she filed the complaint, less than a year later, in July of 2025. The complaint “accused the port of failing to ensure its security cameras were operating, despite charging tenants a monthly service fee.” A fee she would know about because it was revealed that she and her family lived on a sailboat along the marina.
Additionally, she argued that “officials had received several complaints about the ‘aggressive nature’ of otters in the area.” Fortunately, a settlement has been reached. The Port of Bremerton will award the plaintiff $350,000. Additionally, the settlement agrees that neither party is at fault for what occurred.
