When diving in the ocean, you can expect to see a variety of incredible sights. However, what these divers witnessed was truly astonishing. Not only did they get to see this ocean giant up close and personal, but they noticed that it wasn’t alone. Instead, there was an entire community traveling with it.
Divers Noticed This Ocean Giant Traveling With An Entire Community
The whale shark is one of the most stunning creatures in the ocean. People travel far and wide and pay for the chance to swim in the same waters as them. Additionally, researchers have taken an interest in this ocean giant. While diving and studying the creature, divers noticed something particular about the whale shark: it doesn’t travel alone.
Instead, it appears that an entire community travels alongside the ocean’s largest fish. DiscoverWildlife shared how divers and researchers came to this conclusion. While in the Galápagos, researchers encountered a massive whale shark and shared the footage they captured of it.
Fortunately for the rest of the world, the Galapagos Whale Shark Project (GWSP) decided to share that footage on Instagram. In that footage, viewers can see the top of the ocean giant as it is peacefully swimming along. As it is moving forward through the water, various other ocean life come up and rub themselves against the whale shark.
Why Does Marine Life Circulate Near The Whale Shark?
Discover Wildlife shared that the marine life featured included “remoras, jacks, tuna, even sharks.” But what caused these various animals to want to rub themselves against the ocean giant? As it turns out, there are many benefits to rubbing themselves against the whale shark.
The outlet shares that sharks may rub themselves against the whale shark “as a way of dislodging parasites from their bodies.” While that is a good enough reason all on its own, it is not the only reason that many marine animals stick close to this ocean giant.
In addition to removing parasites, other creatures “hitch a ride” or choose to “hunt in the whale shark’s shadow.” Furthermore, the outlet shares that even dolphins are known to “bow ride on these enormous animals.” Researchers have now learned that whale sharks are not just a stunning species all on their own; they are part of a living ecosystem.
