Roaring River Falls is one of the most popular spots in California’s Kings Canyon National Park, but it’s also a dangerous spot. Over Memorial Day weekend, two people—reportedly a married couple—drowned after falling into the water. The Fresno Bee says the victims are Parth Patel, 30, and Dharti Patel, 29, of San Mateo, California. There is very little official information at this point.

A post on Reddit (and the comments on the post) provides some insight into what may have happened based on other people’s experiences on the trail that day.
“Don’t be fooled if the pool appears calm and safe for swimming,” writes the National Park Service (NPS) on its website dedicated to Roaring River Falls. “The rocks are slippery and the currents below the surface of the water can easily drag you under. Drowning in rivers like this one is the most common cause of death in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.”
This story is still developing, and details may change.
