Carl Isom-McDaniel, the 65-year-old man who was attacked by a bison in Yellowstone National Park, provided insight into the terrifying incident from his hospital bed. CBS News shared the interview with Isom-McDaniel on Instagram, offering his side of the story.

CBS wrote in its post that Isom-McDaniel is recovering from surgery at a Montana hospital after breaking his femur. Among the snippets shared by CBS, McDaniel said he and his grandson were watching the bison from a distance, and it wasn’t acting aggressively . . . until it was. Unfortunately, he says, its target was him. He instructed his grandson to go up to the amphitheater, while he stayed low to ensure the bison stayed away from the boy.

“[Bison] move faster than you could ever imagine,” he said in the interview.

However, McDaniel seems sure that it could have been much worse.

“He could have stomped me, he could have gored me, he could have done anything,” McDaniel said about the moment the bison stood over him after throwing him eight feet in the air. Thankfully, it didn’t go that far.
