Banff Grizzly ‘The Boss’ Removes Tracking Collar Within a Week

Last month, Parks Canada humanely trapped and collared three adult male grizzly bears in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. One of the three males was Bear 122, “The Boss,” a famous grizzly who has sired a number of cubs in the park. The Boss didn’t fancy his new jewelry, though, and he managed to remove the collar within a week.

CBC reports that the purpose of the GPS collars is to better understand the animals’ use of the land, with an end goal of being able to better protect the grizzly bears. Apparently, The Boss will not be contributing to this effort. A spokesperson for the Lake Louise, Yoho, and Kootenay Field Unit told CBC that it’s “not unusual” for a large male grizzly like The Boss to figure out how to remove its collar.
