When venturing out into national parks, you can expect to witness some stunning views. You can also expect to encounter some wildlife. While most people are fortunate enough to experience said wildlife from a distance, certain individuals get the fortune — or misfortune— to experience them up close and personal. Recently, a bear injured a couple of hikers who were making their way through Yellowstone National Park.
Bear Injured Hikers In Yellowstone

The National Park Service released a statement regarding the bear that injured a couple of hikers. However, not too many details about the attack were provided. They share that the incident occurred on the afternoon of May 4.
Additionally, they shared that the location of the encounter was “on the Mystic Falls Trails near Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park.” While it is clear that two hikers sustained injuries, the rest is unclear. The park service did not disclose the extent of the injuries or whether or not they were caused by one or multiple bears.
They did, however, share that “National Park Service emergency services personnel responded to the incident,” so we can assume the hikers are in good hands. Furthermore, they assured the public that the situation remains under investigation.
Trail Closures After Bear Injured Hikers
While this may be the first incident this year in which a bear injured hikers, it is not the first time this has happened at Yellowstone. National Park Service shares that another hiker was injured by a bear in September of 2025, and back in 2015, a fatality occurred.
As a result of this most recent encounter, the park has closed certain trails to the public. They shared a map and a list of all of the trails that are temporarily closed while the investigation is underway. The trails that are affected are as follows, per the National Park Service.
- Area west of Grand Loop Road from the north end of Fountain Flat Drive to Black Sand Basin.
- Trails:
- Fairy Falls Trail north of the Grand Prismatic Overlook
- Sentinel Meadows Trail
- Imperial Meadows Trail
- Fairy Creek Trail
- Summit Lake Trail
- Backcountry campsites OG1, OD1, OD2, OD3, OD4, OD5
- Fishing along the Firehole River and associated tributaries within the closure area
