Kids these days are truly amazing. When I was in high school, my biggest accomplishment was making straight A’s — and I was proud of that. However, high school kids today are on an entirely different level. Learn about the high school student who amazed the world after she built a water filter that can remove 95% of microplastics.

The potential harm of microplastics is not a new idea. It has been circulating for quite some time, and people have been looking for solutions to the problem. One of the main obstacles is that plastic is easy to use, and it is everywhere. While many people have struggled to come up with a solution to this modern problem, high school student Mia Heller seems to have the answer.

EatingWell shared details about her life and her incredible water filter solution. The outlet shared that the 18-year-old was “looking to make a difference in her neighborhood of Warrenton, Virginia’s water quality.” She noticed that a lot of filtration systems currently on the market had very high costs, meaning that many families could not afford them.

Heller wanted to make a system that was more accessible to all, meaning lower costs and maintenance were required. She was successful and created a water filter that successfully removes 95% of microplastics. The outlet shared that Heller even received “a special award from the Patent and Trademark Office Society at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair.”

How The Filter Works

This high school student’s filter uses some pretty neat technology. According to the outlet, it is a “ferrofluid-based filtration technology.” Thus, it aligns with Heller’s interests in environmental science and public policy. When speaking to EatingWell, Heller explains exactly how her water filter works and how it removes 95% of microplastics.

First, she explained that a ferrofluid filter is “essentially just a magnetized powder and oil.” From there, she explained, “When you heat water and microplastics, and you combine the ferrofluid with the water, the microplastics are going to be more attracted to the ferrofluid because of its polarity. It’s not because of manetism or anything, just based on how the properties of water and microplastics differ.”

It is simple, effective, and the ferrofluid can be reused once the microplastics are removed, making it sustainable too. Shout out to this young girl for making a difference in the world with her brilliant invention.
